Our Lash Expert

Mariska Van Emmerik is our resident lash expert and has been an esthetician for 25 years. She found her passion in lashes and has been applying lash extensions since their launch into the mainstream during 2005. Her expansive career experience has afforded her many opportunities, including working with such celebrities as Beyonce and Bob Marley's daughter, Cedella Marley. Aside from her celebrity clientele, Mariska was the East coast trainer in this technique and has taught at many salons up and down the coast. She was a trainer at Bostons' Newbury St, which was featured in Mirror Magazine, NYC's John Barrett salon, who won "top three places to have this procedure performed" according to a Vogue Magazine article in 2006, and Miami's Bal Harbor Shops where Ocean Drive Magazine featured Mariskas' work. Needless to say, you'll be in great hands!

Semi-Permanent Lash Options

• Lash Perming gives your lashes the curl that every woman strives for and can be done alone or with our lash dip.

• Lash Tinting offers you the option of keeping your natural lashes, but getting an added boost of color! This is especially great for fair-haired and fair-skinned women who have lashes, but lack color and don't want to constantly apply mascara.

• Lash Extensions can be applied in strips (lasts up to 3 days), clusters (lasts up to a week), or individually (lasts up to 6 weeks). Individual lashes are ideal, not only because they last up to 6 weeks, but also because they are applied to each individual lash and are customized according to your lash length and thickness.

• Lash Dip gives the appearance of thicker, longer, and fuller lashes, while also acting as a semi-permanent mascara. It can be applied over natural lashes or extensions, is waterproof, non-damaging, and lasts up to 6 weeks!

Tips & Tools

• If you want to achieve great lashes at home try our Heated Lash Curler OR our Tantric Sex-Proof Mascara, both of which make excellent stocking stuffers!
• Be kind to your eyes and make sure you always remove your eye make up before bed!  You can also use anti-aging eye cream and sunscreen to keep your eyes looking young, and make sure you replace your mascara every 3 months.

Do your research!

Here at Dermagrafix, it is imperative to meet with every client twice before tattooing can even be scheduled.
This is for the benefit of our clients, we feel it very important for our clients to feel well informed and comfortable prior to undergoing any permanent cosmetic procedure.

Appointment #1:   The Consultation, 30 minutes
  A thorough consultation is important for all clients. A comprehensive question and answer session will take place to familiarize our clients with what the requested procedure entails. This also gives both the client and technician the benefit of getting to know each other, when both are comfortable with each other the process becomes much more enjoyable.

Appointment #2:   The Prep and Design Session, 1 hour (for permanent cosmetic procedures only)
  A design session is essential, this is when the client and technician sit down together to discuss the exact shape, size and color desired. The technician will draw on the requested eyebrows, eyeliner and/or lips with makeup pencil to imitate the final results. Dermagrafix insists every client walks away from this appointment with complete confidence and excitement!

Appointment #3:   Procedure, 2-3 hours
  This is the most exciting of all the visits! The technician will start by redrawing the design that was decided upon during the design session, she will then mark it with surgical marker and follow with a topical anesthetic. The technician will then begin the tattooing process, which is virtuously painless thanks to the topical anesthetics. When the tattooing is completed, the client can begin to feel the convenience of permanent makeup.

Appointment #4:   Finishing Visit, 1-2 hours
  Clients should return about 4 - 6 weeks after their initial procedure for shape and color detail work. Color adjustments are often needed due to the unique changes each skin tone has on the pigment colors. It is possible to darken, lighten, warm up and cool down pigment colors. Shape adjustments are often needed as some of the tattoo may have exfoliated off during the initial healing process. It is essential that all new client procedures come back for this session to complete the procedure area. The finishing visit may be performed as late as 12 weeks post procedure without any additional fees. This will be determined by your specialist.

Appointment #5:   Final Check Up, 15 minutes
  A final checkup is scheduled about 4 - 6 weeks from your finishing session to ensure you are loving your new look. We will also review the steps for long term care and discuss future touch ups. Generally, any other touch ups will be needed anywhere from 1 to 3 years from the original procedure date for an additional fee.


Many of the people we meet with for consultations wonder why 4 appointments are required, well here are some examples of why meeting with your permanent cosmetic technician in advance is essential to guaranteeing a look you can be proud of.



 This is an Alopecia patient who wanted natural eyebrows and a natural lash line. Unfortunatley, she agreed to get tattooed without a consultation or design session. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but these do NOT look natural! No matter where you go or what your price range is, a consult and design session are essential.

This woman opted to have her permanent eyeliner tattooed without doing her research and selected an inexpensive facility. Unfortunately, the technician tattooed too far into the skin which resulted in pigment migration.

Technician attempted to make client's lips appear larger by going outside the natural vermilion border, this should never be attempted as bleeding and migration are very likely.

Waxing...no longer for the girls!

Waxing is just as much for men as it is for women!

Men have come a long way since the days of showing up to work in an unbuttoned button-down that revealed an army of hair fighting its way past the nape of their necks -- haven't they? While they may not go the Brazilian route, you might be surprised (or not) to hear that men are taking it off -- their body hair, that is.

Maybe it's weather-related. Or she's hinting at it. Or, men have been curious about how they'd look with less hair? Whatever the motivation, men have already arrived at this point. Between waxing, shaving, or tweezing - men of all ages, sizes, sexual orientations, ethnic backgrounds, and professions are getting rid of excess body hair.

We wanted to bring these hair removal trends for men to your attention.

Waxing:

What is it? Waxing is a hair removal trend for men that involves spreading hot wax on to the desired area, and then applying a strip of cloth or muslin onto the wax, rubbing it, and ripping off the strip in one fell swoop -- wax, hair, root, and all.

Men are also booking appointments at salons or spas for eyebrow waxes. With guys like David Beckham boasting nicely shaped brows, it seems men aren't settling for less. Guys, this really isn't about becoming a pretty boy -- it's about not walking around with a unibrow. Makes sense. Don't aim for a perfectly arched eyebrow, but waxing is a good way to get rid of eyebrows that are out of control.

Ideal parts to wax: Eyebrows (unibrow), back of neck, back, chest, toes, and knuckles
Pain factor: 8/10
Bottom line: With repeated use, hair gradually becomes thinner because the roots are weakened, but the hair will grow back, albeit at longer intervals. So, if you want to lessen the hair that grows on your toes or chest without permanently abolishing it, this would be the ideal way to go.

Tweezing

What is it? With the help of a trusty pair of tweezers (the sharper, the better), pluck away at the hairs you want to eliminate.

Unless you have lots of time on your hands and can take the constant pinching sensation, save the tweezing for those smaller regions that are covered with excess hair (or for ingrown hairs). Of course, this method is far from permanent.

Ideal parts to pluck: Eyebrows (unibrow), nape of neck
Pain factor: 4/10
Bottom line: Spending more for high-quality tweezers is worth the price. Don't forget to keep up with regular maintenance.

Between the various hair removal trends for men, there is no reason for a guy to let his pubic area grow out of control or his unibrow to attract attention. You could always stick to shaving, but there are some areas that require more care and shaving can cause irritation and razor burn.
